The Journey

Born in Romania and raised in England, Madds has experienced a diverse array of cultural perspectives throughout her life. This unique upbringing sparked her curiosity about her Romani heritage and the stereotypes often associated with it.

"I once believed that embracing my Romani background meant conforming to every stereotype attached to it. I felt pressured to be the Romani woman seen as a deep red rose—a symbol of traditional expectations. However, I've come to understand that identity is far from rigid; it's a spectrum, similar to a range of colours. I've discovered that even pink, a seemingly distant hue, is, a shade of red—a reminder that accepting my heritage doesn't necessitate fitting into a pre-determined mould."

Madds' journey towards accepting her heritage is captured in "The Journey," a series consisting of four prints. Through this artistic endeavour, she shares her personal exploration and the profound insights gained along the way.

In the first photo, she portrays a persona she adopted while distancing herself from her heritage, including a light pink rose. The following images depict common stereotypes associated with Romani women, such as the red rose and traditional Romani aesthetics. Finally, the last photo represents acceptance, merging modern and Romani styles.
