About Madds

Madds, born in Romania and raised in England from the age of seven, was enveloped in a rich tapestry of Romani, Romanian, and English cultures from her upbringing. Her journey into photography began at the age of fifteen, sparked by an art class that ignited her passion for the medium.

Continuing her photographic pursuits through her education, Madds found herself drawn to the art form even more deeply during her time in sixth form and later pursued a dedicated photography course at university. This educational path not only honed her technical skills but also opened doors to invaluable opportunities, including scholarships and collaborative projects with her university's Student Union.

One pivotal moment in Madds' artistic development occurred during a university class where she had the privilege of working with a cancer patient who shared their admiration for the renowned photographer Robert Doisneau. This encounter left a lasting impression on Madds, inspiring her to delve deeper into the realm of self-portraiture.

With her self-portraits, Madds embarked on a journey of exploration, using her camera to capture the essence of her Romani heritage while challenging stereotypes and misconceptions. Concurrently, she founded Madds Art, a platform through which she further honed her craft by capturing the unique personalities of her subjects and empowering them through her lens.

As Madds' body of work continues to evolve, her focus remains on representing a diverse array of individuals, shedding light on their stories and celebrating their inherent worth. Looking ahead, Madds is poised to expand her artistic endeavours, seeking to amplify the voices of those whose stories have yet to be told through the power of photography.
